How to Use Argan Oil to Grow Longer and Stronger Hair (Recipes Included)

If you are in search of a natural treatment you can use to prevent hair loss and speed up hair growth, one of the many recommendations you will come across time and again is argan oil.

Argan oil has been cropping up as an ingredient in more and more shampoos, conditioners, and other hair and skincare products. What is argan oil, and can it help you to promote healthy hair growth?

What is Argan Oil?

Argan oil is a natural product derived from the kernels of the argan tree (Argania spinosa L.). This plant grows throughout Morocco, where the oil is very popular and has been in widespread use for generations. There it is used in cooking much like olive oil (for example as a bread dip).

As you might guess, it also has a longstanding history of use in traditional cosmetics. It is applied to skin to counteract acne and get rid of flaking. It has even been used to treat conditions such as burns and rheumatism. And of course, it is used in hair care.

Just how popular is argan on a global level? Well, consider that back in 2007, there were only two products on the entire US market which included argan oil as an ingredient. As of 2011, that number had increased to more than 100!

As there are so many argan products on the market, you basically have your pick when it comes to caring for your own hair. You can purchase a shampoo or a conditioner which has argan oil in it, or you can just purchase pure argan oil. If you buy the oil in its pure form, you can rub it into your scalp and then wait for it to soak into your scalp and tresses before washing it out.

What Are the Benefits of Argan Oil for Hair?

While argan oil is touted as a product which can totally revolutionize your hair care, you probably want to know what it can actually do! Here are some benefits which are backed up by science:

  • Protect hair from coloring damage: Dying your hair with permanent dyes usually results in your hair becoming brittle and damaged—which can make it break easily (not very helpful when you are trying to grow it out). In clinical trials, argan oil has demonstrated a protective effect which prevents this damage to a degree.
  • Argan oil can help to balance out sebum production (that is the natural oil produced by your scalp): This is very important if you want healthy hair which is neither dry and prone to breakage nor greasy. Plus, if you have a very oily scalp, you can wind up with dandruff, which is no fun. Argan oil thus is an effective antidermatitis agent.
  • Argan oil is a great moisturizer (see the link above): It can soothe and hydrate a dry scalp and also add moisture to dry hair. This keeps your hair from getting brittle and breaking. It also adds some softness and shine to improve the texture of your hair. This tames frizz and flyaways at the same time.

In short, right now there is no scientific evidence that argan oil makes hair growth faster or prevents hair loss. But it does add a smooth, silky shine to your hair and improve body and volume. As such, it can give your hair a fuller appearance. When your hair is hydrated, it is less likely to break and form split ends, which means it can grow longer before reaching its terminal length. That is half the battle to getting your hair to grow!

Argan Oil for Hair Recipes

As I mentioned, there are a number of ways that you can apply argan oil to your hair and scalp:

  • Buy a shampoo or conditioner with argan oil in it and use that.
  • Buy the argan oil on its own, and just add a little bit to the shampoo or conditioner that you are already using.
  • Use argan oil in a recipe with other healthy ingredients for hair growth!

I want to share some popular argan oil hair recipes with you now. Once you read them and get a feel for how you can make use of argan oil for hair care, you will probably come up with some recipe ideas of your own!

Argan Oil with Essential Oils

One of the best things you can do with argan oil is combine it with other essential oils! Why? Because essential oils are way too potent to use without diluting them, and to dilute them, you need a carrier oil. Argan oil is a carrier oil, so you may as well take advantage of that fact!

Here are some essential oils you can try using:

  • Basil
  • Cedarwood
  • Lavender
  • Rosemary
  • Thyme
  • Ylang ylang

I have covered the essential oil topic in-depth over here.

So an example recipe might be:

  • 2 ounces of argan oil
  • 10 drops of one or more essential oils of your choice

Mix them all together in a bottle or jar and save it for ongoing use (it will keep just fine for a really long time). You can either spritz it onto your hair using a spray bottle, or you can work into your hair by hand. If you put a lot of it in your hair, though, you will want to make sure that you do it before a shower. Leaving any oil in your hair for too long can make it really greasy.

Coconut Oil and Argan Oil

Coconut oil, like argan oil, works great as a moisturizer, and has many other benefits besides. Why use just one when you can indulge in the benefits of both? Pamper yourself by creating a coconut oil and argan oil hair mask. You will need:

  • Two tablespoons of coconut oil
  • Ten drops of argan oil
  • 3 drops of an essential oil of your choice (optional)

Mix them all together, and then work the mixture into your hair. For this one, you are definitely going to want to wrap up your hair and leave it in for a while. You can aim for half an hour to an hour, or if you prefer, you can leave it in overnight. After you are done, just shampoo and rinse as usual. Your hair should come out looking and feeling fabulous!

Argan Oil and Olive Oil Hair Mask

Benefits-Of-Olive-Oil-For-Skin

This recipe is the exact same as the one above, except that you trade in coconut oil for olive oil. Read here all about the benefits of olive oil for hair growth.

  • Two tablespoons of olive oil
  • Ten drops of argan oil
  • 3 drops of an essential oil of your choice (optional)

Once again, mix everything together, apply to your hair, wrap it up, wait for as long as you want, and then wash it out.

Argan Oil Leave-In Conditioner

While you want to rinse a hair mask out right away, leave-in treatments can be wonderfully effective—and they are great to use at a moment’s notice. If you wake up with your hair dry and frizzy, you can take care of it right away and get on with your day.

Here is a simple recipe for a leave-in conditioner with just a few basic ingredients:

  • 10 ml of argan oil
  • 30 ml of jojoba oil
  • 50 ml of water
  • A few drops of essential oil (if you wish)

When you mix the ingredients together, you can add them to a spray bottle and use it whenever your hair needs a little extra moisture. Just add a couple of quick sprays and comb it through. Do not use more than this or you will probably get your hair greasy, and since you are leaving it in for the day, you want to avoid doing that.

Argan Oil, Essential Oil, and Rosewater

Argan oil recipes which use rosewater are very popular! In fact, many people love to use rosewater for hair growth. Usually you think of stopping and smelling the roses, not using them for diet or beauty, but rose petals are rich in vitamins C, D, E, A, and B3, and also contain helpful flavonoids. These nutrients are good for your hair, so you may want to consider adding rosewater into your hair care routine.

One great way you can do that is to combine it with argan oil! Here is a recipe you can use:

  • 20 ml argan oil
  • 30 ml rosewater
  • Essential oils of your choice

Combine these ingredients into a spray bottle and use it as a leave-in conditioner. This recipe is basically just a variation on the one above. Why use plain old water when you can use water infused with the nutrition of rose petals? Plus, rose petals smell amazing—and that is how your hair will smell when you use rosewater in it!

Some people also enjoy using argan oil and rosemary water as a hot oil treatment. Just heat up a small amount of the mixture (enough to cover your hair), and rub it in while it is warm. Cover your hair in plastic wrap and wait for half an hour or so, then wash it out.

Argan Oil, Coconut Oil, and Shea Butter for Deep Conditioning

For this recipe, you will need the following:

  • 1 teaspoon of argan oil
  • 1 tablespoon of shea butter
  • 2 tablespoons of coconut oil
  • Essential oil (if you want)

This hydrating moisture is like first aid for dry hair! Melt the shea butter and coconut oil together in the microwave or a saucepan, and then wait for them to cool down a bit. Add in the argan oil and a few drops of essential oil, and stir thoroughly. At this point, you may optionally want to take a few extra minutes to whip them together so that you get a light, fluffy texture. This makes it easier to apply the mask to your hair. Once you do, cover your hair and wait for half an hour, and then shampoo and rinse out your hair. You will be amazed at how silky it is!

Argan Oil and Hemp Seed Oil

If you are a fan of everything hemp, you may know that hemp seed oil contains a high concentration of protein along with vitamins and essential fatty acids. That makes it great for your hair. For this recipe, use:

  • 1 part argan oil
  • 2 parts hemp seed oil
  • A couple drops of any other essential oils you wish to use

Store this mixture in a bottle and you can use it time and again. You can work this into your hair as a conditioning mask and leave it in for half an hour or so before rinsing it out. Alternately, you can comb just a little bit into your hair to tame frizz and fight dryness on the go.

Argan Oil and Egg Hair Mask

egg yolk

Eggs are used in a lot of hair masks. Here is a simple recipe for a hair mask using eggs and your new favorite ingredient, argan oil:

  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tablespoon argan oil

Mix the two ingredients together thoroughly, and then rub the mixture into your scalp and hair, working your way down to the ends. If you have long hair, you may need to double it. Leave it in for around 10 minutes (longer if you want), and then shampoo and rinse.

Argan Oil and Egg Hair Cream

This hair mask is similar to the one above, but there is an extra ingredient:

  • 1 whole egg
  • 2 tablespoons of argan oil
  • ½ tablespoon lemon juice

Mix all the ingredients together thoroughly, and then work it into your hair just like the recipe above. Leave it in your hair for as long as you can stand, and then wash it out in the shower.

Now you know why argan is so popular for hair care and how you can use it as part of your beauty routine! Purchase some pure argan oil and try out a few of these recipes. Use different combinations of essential oils in conjunction with the argan oil to get different effects.

Enjoy hydrated hair that feels and looks amazing!
