So you want to get pregnant? That’s great! This is undoubtedly one of the most exciting times in your life.
But it can also be one of the most stressful and frustrating times as well. Getting pregnant is something most of us spend years and countless dollars trying to avoid – right up to that point where we decide we want a baby.
Then we think, “Now what do I do?”
Outside of the obvious baby-making activity, what steps can women take to boost their chances of fertility, give the pregnancy a firm foundation, and make it an enjoyable experience?

9 Things to Consider Before Trying to Get Pregnant
1. Start Your Prenatal Early
You don’t have to wait for a positive pregnancy test to start your prenatal vitamin – in fact, you should start as soon as you want. Any woman in reproductive age can benefit from a prenatal vitamin.
And keep this in mind: you won’t know you are pregnant for weeks. By taking those vitamins ahead of time, you are creating a nutrient-rich environment for that very, very young baby from day 1.
2. Ditch The Pill
If you have been on the pill, you may want to get off of it a few months before you start trying. You can switch to condoms or other methods until the time comes.
The reason for this is simple. Every woman is different when getting off hormonal contraception. Some women will start ovulating again the very next month.
Some women take a few months to start ovulating again after getting off the pill.
And remember, if you got on the pill due to some ovulatory issue (maybe polycystic ovary syndrome), your issue will still be there when you get off.
The pill doesn’t fix these conditions; they just help with the symptoms.
3. Give Up Alcohol, Smoking, Drugs…and Mercury
The first three are pretty self-explanatory, right? Not only will these three substances harm a young fetus, they can make it more difficult to conceive. So give them up before you start trying (some like to even make a 3-month window before they begin).
But limiting your mercury exposure before pregnancy is super important too. If you know you want to start trying in a few months, avoid high-mercury foods like swordfish or mackerel.
4. Ease Up On The Coffee
A cup of coffee won’t wreck your fertility, but the consistent daily coffee-drip just might. You will need to cut the caffeine when you’re pregnant anyway, so start the slow caffeine detox process beforehand.
Example plan: if you are a 3-a-day coffee drinker, have 2 each day for a week. Then drop it down to 1.
5. Learn About Your Ovulation Cycle
Most women are quite familiar with their menstrual cycle when it comes to their periods. Yet many women have little knowledge about the ovulation part of the cycle. Thing about it… do you know when you ovulate?
Start tracking your ovulation a few months before trying so you know your optimal fertility days.
Here are a few ways to know when you ovulate:
- When you ovulate, you will have egg-white-like cervical mucus that comes out. So get in the habit of looking at your toilet paper after you urinate. It’s not gross; it’s just cool reproductive science.
- Take your temperature everyday right when you wake up before you do anything (aim for same time each morning). If your temperature rose somewhere between .5 and 1 degree, you probably ovulated on that day.
- Track your period every month. Typically, ovulation will occur somewhere around day 14 of your cycle (day 1 is the day you start your period). But every single woman is different. This can only be a general guide.
- Use ovulation test strips from the drug store.
6. Weigh Yourself
Weight plays a big role in fertility. If you are overweight or underweight, you could have trouble conceiving.
The goal should be to safely reach your ideal weight. Do not crash diet or start extreme exercise to lose weight. Both of these can also harm your fertility. And don’t fill up on junk food and empty, sugary calories to gain weight. This will not leave a healthy body either. Instead:
- Focus on eating “real” food: produce, lean meats, beans, nuts, gluten-free grains, and fermented foods
- Get rid of sugary foods and drinks
- Start a moderate exercise routine with activities like swimming, yoga, and even some mild/moderate weight training

7. Toss Out The Chemicals
Chemicals like pesticides and BPAs have been linked to fertility issues in both men and women. It’s a good idea to toss out these chemicals months before you start trying (or as soon as you can). Here are some ways to do this easily:

9. Have a Hurrah!
In no way does having a baby mean you will never have big fun again – not in the slightest. But pregnancy and early infant stages can put a damper on things like date nights and travel. Find a way to have a baby-free hurrah that’s within your budget.
What To Do When You’re Ready To Try
Now you are already to start trying. Here are three more important things to remember if you want to have a baby.
1. Have Sex Every Other Day
Don’t think that having sex every few hours will increase your odds of pregnancy. Most experts agree that every other day is a great goal.
Since sperm can last a few days after ejaculation, you don’t have to time sex down to the minute. As long as you have sex a time or two before you ovulate and a time or two when you are ovulating (or think you’re ovulating), you should be fine
2. Enjoy The Experience
Turning sex into a goal-driven activity filled with stress and expectation can be extremely draining on a relationship – especially if you do not get pregnant right away. And stress isn’t helping anything – including your fertility.
Try to make the experience enjoyable for both of you. Light candles, play music, and still start with some foreplay. Keep the stress levels as low as possible. Remember you are a couple who loves each other.
3. Reach Out To A Fertility Expert If You Have Trouble
Even if all the conditions are perfect, conceiving can take time. The average, healthy, young couple does not need to visit a fertility specialist until they’ve hit a year of trying unsuccessfully. This means, you should prep yourself for the possibility of months of trying.
If you are older or have any health problems, you may want to make your fertility appointment sooner.
And realize how far fertility treatments have come. You should feel hopeful that if you do have conception issues, a specialist in your area could help you overcome those issues.
