Taking Celery Seed Extract for Gout Pain

- One study of patients will all kinds of arthritis, including gout, took celery seed extract twice daily. There was “significant” relief of pain for the participants in about three weeks.
- Another study did something quite similar, but this time gave patients a higher dose than the first study. The results were similar, but even more significant and also included better mobility and overall quality of life on top of pain management.
Finally, the mild diuretic properties of celery seeds can help the body flush out uric acid buildup – which is exactly what’s responsible for a gout attack in the first place.
And don’t think this celery seed extract has only some health and wellness cult following. Even more “modern” or “Western” websites like WebMD acknowledge its ability to “decrease arthritis symptoms.”
How To Take Celery Seed For Gout
Eating a bunch of celery stalks is not going to provide you with the levels you need to take care of your gout attack. And all the goodness you really want is found in the seed anyway.
But don’t eat the seeds themselves. It’s all about the extract.
The best and easiest way to take celery seed extract is simply in a swallowable supplement. The way I like to do this is in combination with other natural supplements that can improve gout. These include:
- Cherry Extract: Cherries can both reduce uric acid levels and lower inflammation. Studies have shown great success in combatting gout by eating cherries and by taking it in extract form.
- Chanca Piedra: Chanca piedra can also help reduce the inflammation of gout, plus it reduces your chances of a uric acid kidney stone. This is absolutely connected to gout because both pop up after a build-up of uric acid. I know you don’t want a gout attack followed by a kidney stone!

For the most part celery seed extract is considered to be safe for most adults. But there are a few groups of people who should be cautious:
- Pregnant and breastfeeding women: Some research shows that celery in medicinal amounts may cause a miscarriage. This is not fully confirmed, but it is suggested to avoid it during pregnancy. It may also reduce milk production in breastfeeding women.
- Bleeding Disorders: Celery in medicinal amounts may up the odds of bleeding.
- Kidney Problems: It’s possible that medicinal celery could cause kidney problems.
- Blood pressure: Celery in medicinal amounts can lower your blood pressure – so if you already have high blood pressure, it could cause a problem.
- Surgery: If you are about to go in for surgery, your doctor may want you to stop taking medicinal celery for 2 weeks before your operation.
There are also a few medications that celery can negatively interact with:
- Levothyroxine (for thyroid)
- Photosentizing drugs
